Challenge Week

On the 11th January 2010 Gargunnock Primary School started their Challenge Week which would continue to the 15th.

Each teacher picked a complex challenge which had to be finished by the end of the week. Everyone signed their name up for the challenge they wanted to do. You could choose either: a primary book, a family poster, a board game, a welcome film, a work belt for the SLAs, a future car or an eco code for the school to follow. You could work by yourself or in groups of a maximum of 4.

On Monday the 11th everyone separated into the classroom’s of the teacher who came up with the challenge. The teacher briefly explained the meaning of the task and then we got to work.

Over the week the children began to produce excellent masterpieces. By the end of the week each group had created an amazing piece of work.

Thank you to Mrs Bernard who came

up with the idea of challenge week

Without her and the other teachers it

Wouldn’t have been such a success!

P7 Step Up Festival at Stirling High

On Friday the 14th May P7 went to Stirling High School to take part in a Sports Festival. When we arrived, we were led by some staff to the main sports hall. There were lots of other children there – all of which would be coming to the high school after the summer. We sat in the corner and put down our things.

Our Active-schools coordinator, Angela Hunter, had organized the festival. She was in the middle of the hall with about 10 other Active Stirling workers with her, along with the P.E staff from the high school. We were all allocated a sticker with our group and two activities on it.

There were six groups. I was in group 6 with Eilidh, and we were doing Athletics ad Hockey. The other activities were Football, Dance, Rugby, and Basketball. Every group had 2 activities to do.

Suddenly, Angela called to everyone and asked us to come into the middle. She introduced all the staff and asked us to line up in our groups. Our group made our way outside to the Athletics field outside.

Unfortunately, it was raining. We all got soaked!

We met our leaders for Athletics and they split us into another 3 groups, one for Javelin, another for Long Jump and one more for running. We did Javelins first. The javelins were a bit squint and broken, but it was fun nonetheless.

Next was running. It was ok. We learned about different ways to start running in races. Next was Long jump it was really fun! We had to sprint up to the sandpit and jump in, but you had to land on two feet.

After that, we went back to the (thankfully) dry hall. We had a snack and a drink and went out to our next activity: Hockey. We learned some basic dribbling and passing skills, and then we played a proper game. Nobody in either team in my game scored throughout the whole game!

It was a super trip and I hope to do something like this again.

Eco Recycling Sale/Bring and Buy

During the winter term Primary 6/7 has been studying World War 2. We have been studying very hard and have learnt a lot. We also had a Glow Meet with a World War 2 veteran (This is in another report). For a special treat P6/7 are going to a special museum called the Scottish Street Museum in Glasgow. Unfortunately this trip would be very expensive so we decided to try an enterprising approach at this problem. We had a vote on some suggestions and a Bring and Buy sale was chosen. This would also help us earn our second Green Flag as our assessment is nearing, so we decided to call it an “Eco Recycling Sale”.

Many of the pupils made kindly donations of large collections of books, DVDs, videos and bric-a-brac. There were 5 stalls; each stall was dedicated to one price. The stalls consisted of a 5p, a 20p, 50p, £1 and over £1 stalls. Unfortunately not everything was sold and quite a few people forgot to bring money but wanted to buy something so we had an additional sale the next day. All the donations we didn’t sell then went to charity. Our sale was a big success and we raised £47.50. This will help the funding of our educational trip magnificently.

P6 Visit to Flanders Moss 2009

On the 3rd November 2009, P6 went to Flanders Moss to visit the new oak, birds eye veiw tower. We had a tour guide called Nick that took us around the moss and at the very end we went up the tower. Nick told us the different types of moss we saw as we walked on the plastic path. In the car park there was a long wooden pole with '7000 years' all the way up to 'today' in thousands.
I have hever been to Flanders Moss before. It was an enjoyable visit and I would like to go there again.

P 4/5 project on Scotland

P4/5 have been doing a project about Scotland. We have been recently doing some pictures of the mountains from the school’s view using pencil and pen and ink. We have also been doing some paint work (water colours).

We have also been in touch with another girl from Glasgow school called Olivia. We have been talking about what the differences there are between our schools. In technology we have been designing structures and are making bridges out of wood. We will be testing these to see which bridge can hold the most weight.

P6/7 Election Recount

Last term P6/7 held an election in our class room. We divided in to different political parties: Labour; Conservatives; SNP; The Liberal Democrats and the clerks.

The Clerks were in charge of setting up the classroom and also organizing the election by making the voting register and the ballot papers.

On the 1st of April 21, 2010 we set up the party tables with rosettes, balloons, leaflets and more. Wile we did this the clerks set up the classroom. Then -one at a time- the classes came out to vote. First the P1/2’s. They came and looked around the party tables. After being called they lined up to go in to the polling station (Our Classroom!) to vote.

They got a piece of paper- the ballot paper- to vote with. They put a tick in the box beside the name they wanted to vote for. One everyone had voted the clerks counted the votes 3 times and shredded the ballot papers.

We then made our way up to the church for our Easter service. Then Mr Black announced the results-

Labour- 8

Conservatives- 9

SNP- 18

Liberal democrats- 22

Total votes- 57

We were all very pleased with how the election had gone.

Choices for life! May 12th 2010

It was Wednesday morning and P7 were all wondering what we were going to be doing at choices for life that day. We left at nine o’clock exactly on a coach, which easily seated all 11 of us.

We were all full of excitement as we finally reached Edinburgh, where Choices for life was awaiting our arrival. After we passed the airport, we finally turned of into a massive car park filled with coaches, schoolchildren and teachers all hurrying towards the Highland centre. We had finally arrived! We all piled off the bus, joining the army of people heading for the highland centre, which counting teachers was 400 schools and about 4,000 people! When we finally got into the hall, there was a lot of loud music and people singing and dancing around

After half an hour it finally started and Real radio presenters Steve and Mark came onto the stage and announced that, we were all at Choices for life and were going to have a great time. They told us that Choices for life was all about making the right decisions in life and encouraging us not to drink or take drugs. From then on Choices for life was a massive concert for kids that not only was loud and noisy but also persuaded everyone in the crowded hall not to make the wrong choices in life.

In addition to having a great time, we all learned about the dangers of society and Steve from Real Radio announced that we were the loudest crowd that Choices for life had ever had!

Potted Sports

On the 13th of June 2010 Mrs Mac (the P.E teacher) organised a potted sports morning for the P1’s to P7’s, so the whole school was involved. First we changed in to our P.E kits and then we met in the hall. Mrs Mac divided us in to eight teams: Red 1; Red 2; Blue 1; Blue 2; Green 1; Green 2; Yellow 1 and yellow 2. Each team had two team leaders- 1 girl and 1 boy. These were mostly P7’s but about five were P6’s.

We were then led out side to practise the eight activities. These activities were: Space hoppers; Relays; Sacks; Skipping; Score a basked in the basked ball hoops; over and under; quick feet and balance. Then the leaders went and got a score record sheet. We then did it for real. The same activities, just recording the scores this time round.

We then found out that red 1 had won with 215 points once they had added up their points for each of the events. We had a very fun time and the sun kept shining so that was a bonus!

Sports Day

On Monday 31st May we had our sports day. The sun shone and everyone was looking forward to today’s activities. We sat in our classes and waited for the sports to begin. There were loads of different races like the middle distance, sprint, the three legged race and loads more. We did the relay in our houses. Each house was split into four relay teams. Girls P1-4, Girls P4-7, Boys P1-4 and Boys P4-7. (The P4’s were split in half.)

We had the McCallum trophy middle distance which was four times around the track.

As for the normal middle distance P1-3 ran once around the track and P4-7 ran twice around the track. Everyone did the sack race, P6/7 did the three legged race, P1-3 did the egg and spoon race (they actually used potatoes) and P4/5 did the skipping race.

Everybody did the sprint which was on the straight track and in between all of the sports we squeezed in a small brake. After the sports we all sat down together to see who would win the McCallum trophy and who would come 2nd and 3rd.

For the girls P7’s Helen Mitchell won the trophy and 1st medal, 2nd was P7’s Eilidh Vass-Payne and finally 3rd was P6’s Chloe Bruce.

As for the boys the winner of the trophy and 1st place medal was P7’s Luca Berits, 2nd was James Letford and 3rd was Ruaraidh Scott.

Overall the day was brilliant and everyone had loads of fun.
